Alfie's Story: Three Broken Legs And A Second Chance

Meet Alfie

Alfie is a brave and resilient dog who arrived from Bamaga with a badly fractured leg, in urgent need of care and compassion.

From the moment he came into our care, it was clear that his journey would not be an easy one - but Alfie's strength and spirit quickly captured our hearts.

A Shocking Discovery

What we didn't expect was what the specialist scans would reveal.

Alfie's injury was more complex than first thought, with evidence of older fractures that had healed without treatment.

A Difficult Decision

Following thorough assessment, veterinarians determined that the kindest option was to amputate Alfie's severely damaged leg.

It was a long and delicate surgery.

During the procedure, vets discovered muscle growing over bone from previous untreated fractures, making the operation even more complex.

Despite the challenges, the surgery was successful.

The Cost of Care

The surgery alone cost $2,500.

This was in addition to the expenses already incurred to bring Alfie to safety, including flights, vaccinations, consultations, scans, pain relief, food and preventative treatments.

Community Support

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Alfie received the care he needed.

Today, he is recovering comfortably with his foster carers and adjusting beautifully to life on three legs.

Why It Matters

Alfie's story is a powerful reminder that emergency veterinary care doesn't just save lives.

It gives animals the chance to live free from pain and suffering.

The Emergency Veterinary Care Bucket ensures that when the next Alfie arrives, we can say "yes" without hesitation.
